Do you have permanent changes in your stool?

I’ve had IBS off and on for years. Lately though, it’s gotten much worse. My BM alternates between diarrhea, very narrow stools and pebbles. I no longer have “regular” BMs. I’m concerned it may be cancer and not IBS. Have any of you experienced missing your regular stools for a long period of time?
BTW, I’m new to the group and looking forward to learning more about my condition and getting to know you. Thank you.

  1. Hi and welcome, we're so glad to have you in this community!
I have personally only experienced this once and it ended up being something other then IBS. I got antibiotics and was all better within a week or so. Since these symptoms are somewhat new, I would definitely talk about it with your doctor and maybe get additional tests done, just to be sure. I feel like we as IBS sufferers sometimes just assume that every digestive symptom is another IBS symptom, but that's not necessarily true.
Something similar happened to one of our advocates who writes about it here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/new-symptoms - although of course her symptoms were completely different.

    1. Yeah, I was able to find this original post. Thank you! I’ll let you know after my colonoscopy what I found. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  2. I have not had a normal toilet for 4 months, steatorrhoea I think most of the time, weight loss of about 1 stone but now weight loss stopped just stuck at low weight, diarrhoea and constipation, bloating and wind but not much pain at all, looked like IBS from my perspective after my clear scopes and also calprotectin test but now worried about pancreas problems as steatorrhoea seems more common with that than IBS? so back to worrying about cancer again and first gp appointment not until 25th October but feel I need my stool checked for fat deposits, very worried as my symptoms are every day, I hope someone can tell me that steatorrhoea is not uncommon for IBS but also the fact I'm on folic acid tablets for low folate serum as seems I'm not absorbing my food makes me very scared of pancreatic cancer but seems my GP/hospital are quite happy to discharge me after my scopes showed nothing but of course something is causing my everyday symptoms.

    1. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this every day and can't get answers from your doctors. I completely understand how hard it is to wait for an appointment if you're so stressed about your symptoms. Hopefully, you'll get answers very soon. Please keep us updated if you like. Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)

  3. I didn't have the same symptoms as you had. But yes, my bowel movements changed all of a sudden in early 2020. There had been about 3 brief incidents before that, in 2017 and 2018, but my IBS started more permanently in 2020. (I was diagnosed with IBS by my doctor.) And abnormal bm's were always something I struggled with, plus some discomfort, and lower abdominal bloating at times.
But in between, there were times when I was absolutely normal, and recently (fingers crossed) for weeks over the summer and up to now, I was quite well with just the odd little glitch occasionally, or slighter, fainter symptoms. But my bm's are not too bad right now.
So, even though the IBS was set-in its ways, I have improved, and I hope you might improve too as time goes by

    1. Thank you, . Did you do anything different or eat differently to go back to normal BMs?
