Can IBS cause pain on left side

Hi everybody! Very new to this forum and I am hoping to be able to get some reassurance / advice. I have always had IBS symptoms that come and go but recently I seem to have a sudden flare up. It started with pain in my waist on the left side and also general aching in my left side too (upper and lower) it comes and goes but certainly seems to be linked to eating and going to the toilet. Does this sound familiar to anybody else with IBS? The pain can be aching but sometimes more sharp. I get it on the other side too but not as much as the left. Been to see the doctor who has sent me for blood tests, stool sample etc... but just said it's probably IBS. Sometimes the pain feels quite high up so wasn't sure if that would be IBS. Also, it has come on so quickly so wasn't sure if that possble too. Thanks in advance!

  1. With IBS I certainly get pain in those areas. I would urge your doctor to also send you for imaging to make sure nothing more serious is going on. What I've learned throughout my journey with Crohn's and IBS, is you have to advocate for tests. It's better to do all the tests and have peace of mind then not thoroughly investigate and regret it later. Start with imaging and if something is found press for a colonoscopy with biopsy. 1. Yep, it starts in the stomach, which is what you're feeling. When you know you're in a flareup, go on that BRATY diet- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, and yogurt until it all settles down.

      1. I would speak with your physician about your symptoms. Everyone can have different/similar symptoms depending on their type/degree of condition. For instance I have left sided UC. While my major issue is not pain related, if I sleep on my left side it usually triggers a trip to the bathroom.

        1. Thanks for commenting. Great reminder that everyone is different and speaking with your doctor, who knows your individual case, is best. Appreciate you being part of our community! Best, Kelly, Irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team member
