Are these normal symptoms of IBS?

Hi guys I’ve been suffering with IBS for 8 years now and I’ve had every test you can think of to rule out IBD and they all came back negative. My IBS is solely IBS-d with sever bloating, gas, lower abdominal pain (below my belly button), diarrhoea and stomach problems too, my stomach and bowels are very noisy. If I lay on my back, my stomach will make really loud weird noises. It’s always been like this for me since my symptoms started and unfortunately my symptoms are constant. I have been managing it with medication (codeine and loperamide) but I have to take them daily else I will get severe symptoms. Theres no such thing as a flare up for me because my symptoms are constant. I feel it in my sleep, when I’m awake and never get a break. This is just how my gut functions sadly.

I’ve felt extremely discouraged from going for more medical investigations because I’m always told that theres nothing wrong with me and I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but its just so frustrating when your physically suffering and your told there’s nothing there and there’s nothing they can do for you.

I just wanted to know if it’s normal to have non-stop chronic bowel issues. My bowels just don’t like the presence of food regardless of what food it is. There are things that definitely make my symptoms much worse like caffeine, sugar, milk and certain take aways but even if I was to eat plain food like bread and rice and avoid all the triggering food I will still have symptoms. I get severe bloating, gas, pain and diarrhoea from food in general. I guess it’s just how my bowels function at this point and it’s got less to do with what I eat and is related to my bowel’s function perhaps. Does anyone else experience something similar and have nonstop symptoms or do you experience symptoms periodically or when something triggers it.

I mentioned before I was taking medication. It’s been helpful but doesn’t always eliminate my symptoms. The pain relief is very effective but I have to take it daily prophylacticly because it only really works at reducing/preventing symptoms rather than treating them when my gut is responding negatively to the presence of food. Most people with IBS who I’ve come across don’t have constant symptoms and can be symptom free for long periods of time and don’t rely on medication for basic gut function.

In the past I’ve had periods of time where my symptoms were more manageable and the efficacy of my medications was improved but it never lasted. During these times I would take probiotics or certain antibiotics which helped but eventually my symptoms would go back to what they were before or get even worse. It was like my gut would override its improved state to go back to being dysfunctional. There’s been times where my symptoms would randomly improve (not disappear but become more manageable with medication) and more predictable. I can’t attribute the improvement to anything specific just woke up one day and my guy decided not to torment me I guess.

Sorry for the long rant I just feel like I’m losing it, I don’t know what it’s like to be symptom free or not have take medication to get semi functional bowels. Is this normal for IBS? Or could it possibly be IBD that hasn’t been detectable or diagnosed. The reason why I ask is because whilst I know IBS symptoms can be severe the pain I end up in is so debilitating and I’m always tired, my gut is irritated constantly regardless of what I eat.

All I want is to be able to manage my condition and be symptom free. It’s extremely difficult and distressing to live like this. I feel no peace and just awful. whenever I have symptoms which sadly is all the time, it significantly impacts my daily life and is the source of all my misery anxiety and depression. I’m always worried about how I’ll manage to get through each day. I honestly feel like I’m living life on survival mode.

  1. I'm so sorry you're dealing with these constant symptoms. Based on my personal experience and what I've heard from others, IBS tends to come in flares rather than constant symptoms, so the fact that you never get a break does sound like there might be something else going on... I can imagine how incredibly frustrating it is to be told that you "just have IBS" when you're constantly suffering like this. 🙁
Could you possibly be allergic or intolerant to a certain food or food group? There are common triggers like gluten (even if you tested negative for Celiac!) and dairy, but we also have community members with an alpha-gal allergy, a strong reaction to artificial citric acid, and even an allergy to potatoes.
Have you ever been tested for SIBO? Since you mention that certain antibiotics helped, this might be worth exploring.
Speaking of antibiotics, are the doctors sure that you don't have an infection? They don't always show up on stool tests, at least that's what my doctor told me...
If you feel like you've done every test there is in traditional medicine, you could also try seeing a naturopathic doctor as they can do different tests as far as I know.
As for the potentially undiagnosed IBD that you're worried about: what kinds of tests have you done to rule it out?
I really hope that you'll get some answers soon so that you can get some relief...

    1. Thanks so much for your reply, the last test I had was a hydrogen breath test and this was around five years ago. The consultant I had at the time told me that my results were normal however, I saw another consultant last year who told me that my results were actually inconclusive. I had a colonoscopy, endoscopy, I swallowed a camera, I had a barium swallow test and multiple stool and blood test. All of these were done around 5/6 years ago and since then I haven’t had anymore test due to being discharged from my consultant. I know in some cases things don’t show up immediately but I’m struggling to understand my symptoms because they are constant and I have no normal function of my bowels without medication. I don't have any food allergies, I’ve been tested for them before and everything came back negative. I don’t have a family history of IBD but given how severe my symptoms are and how constant they’ve been I’m not entirely sure if it’s just IBS especially since all the local measures I’ve taken like diet modification, stress management etch haven’t improved anything for me. I have no idea if it is bacterial. I initially thought that it was since they treated me for H.pylori and campylobacter with antibiotics which initially helped. Last year I was given rifaximin. Probiotics have also helped my symptoms in the past too however these have only helped temporarily and after a few day my symptoms would return and these medications would be absolutely useless in managing my symptoms. It’s like my body adapts to override any positive improvements and just wants to work dysfunctionally.

I’m at the point where I feel extremely exhausted and discouraged because I’m yet to have a break from these symptoms. All I know for certain is that my bowels get irritated from food, anything and everything I eat. I don’t know if it’s just a functional problem or if my body is responding like this because of internal injury/inflammation. I don’t think IBS is supposed to be constant. I don’t know if this sounds consistent with IBS or other gut conditions but I’ll try getting investigated for SIBO again. Many thanks for your encouraging words xx

      1. Are you having these symptoms since your H.pylori and campylobacter infection? If yes, it really does sound like they maybe just came back, or another infection developed after the antibiotics...
I just saw that @lynnneese commented the same thing below based in their experience, so it might be worth getting new tests done for that. I'm not an expert obviously, it's just that your symptoms (especially the fact that they're constant and don't react to diet changes or medication) don't necessarily sound like IBS but remind me a lot of a bacterial infection that I had in the past. I've also heard from people who lived with C. diff. for years because it was falsely diagnosed as IBS...

    2. Have you ever been tested for H-Pilot. I had that for three years before it was diagnosed & lived with the symptoms you describe every day. It was awful.

      1. thanks for the advice and I did get tested for it around 6/7 years ago and I was positive for it which gave me a course of antibiotics. These helped initially but after about a week my symptoms came back. I had a stool test done last summer and it came back normal but I’ll try and get another one done specifically to test for H.pylori

    3. Siri changed it. It’s H-pilori
