Restaurant work with gluten sensitivity

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has encountered this issue: I have been

thinking for a while about working at a restaurant. I do like working

with food, but I was wondering about my exposure to a lot of gluten

products. The place I had in mind would definitely expose me to

"regular" flour, not only the handling of it, but I'm sure it would be in the

air as well. Does anyone know if this would be bad for me? Thanks!

  1. Perhaps it would be if you are going in there daily. I am not a doctor though, so not totally sure. If your sensitivity is severe, then I would think you shouldn't work in a place where you would be breathing it in so much. Just my opinion. -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. , thanks for the reply. I had the same thought about breathing in the gluten, that makes sense. It would still get into my body, even though I wouldn't actually be eating it. And I would feel so bad to take a job like that and then have to quit because I got "glutened". Thanks again!

      1. Yea, I agree. No problem! Always here to help. Best, Elizabeth (team member)

    2. Hi, if you are celiac and must avoid even traces of gluten, you can not work in an environment where gluten based flours are used. This does become airborne, and remains in the air, to be inhaled and swallowed as it comes into your throat. You must also look for any meds that are put into eyes, nose, inhaled, mouth rinse, for gluten content. My sister loved to do Christmas cookie parties, where the creativity (and flour) were abundant. I could not attend due to risky gluten flour being airborne.

      1. , thank you for your input. I haven't been diagnosed as celiac at this time, so far just gluten sensitive, but what you have mentioned is worth keeping in mind for all of us here with gut issues. Probably any way that gluten gets in our bodies, it wouldn't be good for us. Thanks for your insight, and take care! 😀
