IBS and Parkinsons

I am a 68 yr. Old male. I have had IBS since high school. I never expected to live this long with this condition. Two years ago I received a Parkinson's diagnosis that shook me to the core. Now my IBS condition is gradually getting worse. I have urgent needs for immediate evacuation with explosive episodes of diarrhea. This will go on for 5- 8 urgent trips to the throne. I rarely have had diarrhea in the past but I believe that Parkinson's has affected my bowels already in its progression. As if IBS alone was not bad enough to deal with!. As with others, I have many embarrassing stories related to IBS situations that I don't need to explain. You know what they are. Mh

  1. I'm so sorry that you've been dealing with IBS for so long and that it has now gotten so much worse with Parkinson's. Have you mentioned these changes to your doctor? If you haven't already, I'd definitely do that, just to make sure that nothing else (like an infection or other illness) is going on.
Our community member was also diagnosed with Parkinson's on top of IBS, she shared her story: here https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/ibs-18. If you're interested, we also have an entire Parkinson's community here: https://parkinsonsdisease.net/. I did a quick search on there and found this article about gastrointestinal diseases and Parkinson's: https://parkinsonsdisease.net/living-with-pd/gastrointestinal-risk-link. I hope this helps. You're not alone and I hope that other community members will chime in with their experiences soon.

    1. It's definitely worth scheduling an appointment with your doctor or specialist to discuss these effects.
If you haven't had symptoms like that before with your IBS, then something "new" could be causing it, or like Karina said, possibly you have a tummy bug, or maybe a new food intolerance, or something running alongside, coincidentally?

But I can imagine you have been given some medications for your Parkinson's? GI distress can sometimes be connected with medication side effects. I'm not saying it is, but it's worth a discussion with your doctor as there might be a different medication you could have instead?

      1. I second what says about the possibility of the new symptoms being a new medication. Have a discussion with your doctor about it. So sorry you are going through this. -Elizabeth (team member)
