IBS and Back Pain

Hi All

Do any fellow IBS sufferers get back pain especially after a flare up? It's becoming more and more of a feature for me, it's a pain that takes effect when walking or even standing to wash the pots etc, it's fine once I sit down.

I think gassy drinks etc are far more of a problem for me than I realised to. Had a can of diet coke this morning and there comes the aches back and front!

Anyone have any hints of anything that helps with treating the back pain?

Thanks

Jules

  1. I also have lower back pain which I guess is from IBS. I don't do any gassy drinks because dieticians have said they are bad for your diet.

    1. I think you're right, I like a diet coke as I'm not a tea or coffee drinker but it definitely has its affect on my IBS.

  2. Thanks for reaching out. I hope more chime in with their personal experience to share. Thanks to for sharing! Have you tried a heating pad or some gentle yoga to stretch out your back? Be sure to speak with your doctor if you have not already, Jules, about any new, changing or concerning symptoms. 1. that's a good idea, trying something natural rather than medicinal - I did used to do yoga classes so I should try and do a little again. My back is calming down as my flare up has calmed - it just took me a long time to realise my fleeting pains and aches were related to my IBS and quite commonly after drinking diet coke etc.

  3. I have had lower back pain for many years but it is definitely attached to my IBS now. In the morning before a bm, it is really bad. It's OK when I first get up and am brushing my teeth etc, but when I go downstairs and get moving it really hurts. It is a relief when I have to go to the toilet and can sit on the seat with my knees up a bit (slightly "squatty-potty"😉 Phew, the pain is easier as soon as I sit like that.
Then when I'm done I noticed that the pain eases up a lot and I am not too bad for the rest of the day, and moving around, exercise etc.
My back is not good. I have a twisted pelvis and some slight scoliosis of the spine. I often wonder if that has triggered ibs for me.
Washing up dishes hurts too, to one degree or another, so I understand what you mean.
I put some Deep Heat rub on my back and sacral area at the back and that does help. But of course it doesn't cure, it just eases up the muscle and ligament spasms. Warm baths are glorious! Cold weather and damp weather make it worse. I always make sure to keep my lower back well wrapped up.

    1. I'm no doctor but I definitely think spine issues contribute to IBS. I think it's great you keep your lower back wrapped up. Are you able to do light exercise? -Elizabeth (team member)

  4. My whole lifestyle revolves around exercise of one kind or another. I think sometimes I have done too much. Unfortunately some of it is rather heavy exercise and unavoidable.
