Stress Management Techniques Series

Stress management can be beneficial to everyone, but prioritizing it can be especially beneficial for those of us with IBS. Not engaging in stress management at all can exacerbate or even be the cause of symptoms. There are countless techniques we can employ in our daily lives, but it can take some time to figure out what works best.

  1. So true! Thank you so much for sharing with us. I always try to breathe and ease myself when a flare-up happens. Anxiety is my biggest trigger, so managing those symptoms is super helpful!

    1. I find that low-impact exercises, like yoga, help. Resistance training is also a good approach. I find that focusing on the workouts distracts my OCD-like mind, which lowers anxiety and IBS symptoms. Diet considerations come along with that, though, as you need higher macronutrients like protein while keeping a low-FODMAP diet profile. So, the added benefit is that you can focus on building muscle while reducing stress and subsequent symptoms.
A recent good article is linked here that provides nutrition tips for those interested in trying to build muscle through resistance training. It's kind of a tangent to my original thoughts, but I found it helpful!

      1. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! As someone whose IBS is also triggered by anxiety, Yoga definitely helps me, as does eating a balanced diet. I often notice that I get super anxious whenever I skip breakfast or don't move or go outside during the day. Wishing you a symptom-free day, Karina (team member)

    2. You are very welcome. In addition to the above, maintaining routines incorporating exercise has been beneficial...routines are a key component, though! I also wish you a symptom-free day.

      1. Routines are great, they life it so much easier for me, too. Thanks again! 😀 Karina (team member)

    3. Hello there.I can't open the link, but I'd thought I chime anyways.

Based on the thread in previous replies, I got the b=general gist.

Routine - I can't advocate this enough.I actually had a near death experience about a couple of weeks ago, where the gastric-reflux(heartburn) almost suffocated me.

However through keeping calm and positioning my body to get air into my lungs; I managed to get the attack under control.

I think stress from an external actor (a person) and the fact that I had to attend a meeting outside of my normal routine, caused that attack.Fortunately the last major attack happened about 7 years ago

      1. Wow, I'm so sorry that this happened to you and that you get such bad attacks. I'm glad that you were able to stay calm and get it under control. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. How are you managing on a daily basis? Karina (team member)
