Spotlight: Living With IBS & Other Chronic Conditions

We hear many community members speak of the other chronic health conditions they live with along with IBS. Coping with IBS can present many challenges on its own, so this June, we want to discuss managing multiple conditions with you! Do you have any tips or advice? Just want to vent? Share with us below!

  1. Hi,

I suffer from IBS, and I'm often tired, especially when I have diarrheas...

I sleep well, but in the morning, after breakfast, and after lunch around midday, the digestion must be difficult, my belly usually start to be noisy and painful, so this must be the cause of tiredness...

It's sometimes difficult at work, because it's already shameful to have diarrheas at work because you have to share the toilets with other colleagues... but in addition if you're tired and yawn...

    1. We hear you, Olivier! IBS can be very draining on your energy. Have you found any luck with the low-FODMAP diet that you mentioned you were going to try?

  2. Hi,
I tried to start the low FODMAP diet, in the beginning of the week, but I stopped, because I had to go to the restaurant with colleagues, and I couldn't avoid this restaurant. (Even if I was sick just after, as usual...)

My doctor also wanted me to go to an Allergists that could better identify my allergies / intolerances and make a check-up before starting this diet.
And this was a good idea, because I already knew that I have some allergies to some food, vegetables, fruits, pollens, grasses, but I wasn't expecting some others that the allergist discovered, like peanut for example. I don't eat peanuts often, so I didn't know that I could be allergic.
But he also confirmed some allergies that I presumed (like strawberries, apple etc...)
He told me, that all these allergies (I've been allergic to pollens, grasses... since my teenage years) ,also causes intolerances to products containing wheat, orgen, gluten ... And makes digestion difficult

So, now this check-up had been done, (I also had a colonoscopy last month) it's confirmed, I'm gonna start the low FODMAP diet avoiding what I'm allergic too, tomorrow !

    1. I'm glad you were able to make all those determinations! Allergies can definitely be troublesome on the gut. I have a severe cashew/pistachio allergy, and the last time I ingested cashews (before going into anaphylactic shock!), I had diarrhea and sharp intestinal pain.

Please let us know how the new diet plan works out! If you need some ideas, we have a lot of IBS-friendly recipes here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/recipes/. Just substitute out any ingredients that might be an allergen. Take care, Ollivier!
