Black Forest Cake

This has become my favorite cake to make. You can choose to add eggs if you like, but I make mine without.

Ingredients for black forest cake

  • 1 3/4 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs – can be omitted
  • 1/2 cup vegan margarine ( I’ve been using 2 tbsp) does not require melting, straight from out of refrigerator
  • 1/4 cup of cherry brandy
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 3 cup whipping cream – I omitted because lactose intolerant
  • 3 cups cherries canned – can use less
  • 2 cups chocolate shavings – I omitted because I’m lactose intolerant.


Directions for black forest cake

  1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees.
  2. Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt and baking powder.
  3. Cream butter with sugar until very light. Can add 2 eggs one at a time if you choose to use them. I didn’t add eggs.
  4. Mix the brandy with the water. Fold in the cream mixture alternating 1/3 portions with flour mixture.
  5. Lightly butter and flour dust two 9 inch round cake pans. Pour batter evenly into each.
  6. Bake for 35-37 mins.
  7. Remove and cool for 10 minutes. Chill.
  8. Whip the cream. Place cherries on top of cake. Add second cake over. Spread with whipping cream and chocolate shavings.

    @tmholland, I to like Black Forest over any other if I had to pick. Definetely a recipe I’m holding onto. Hope everyone will enjoy to make and eat :).
