Is there a difference between fructose malabsorption and IBS?

The low fodmap diet is followed for both so I am wondering what the difference is? I have FM so am wondering if IBS medication could help me.

  1. Hello! That's a great question. There is likely an overlap between fructose malabsorption and IBS.

In certain cases, those that experience fructose malabsorption may only be sensitive to that particular carbohydrate, however in my practice experience, I typically find fructose malabsorption presents alongside IBS. It would depend on your symptoms, as well as if a diet lower in excess fructose was sufficient to manage your symptoms. It sounds to me like you're getting inadequate symptom relief from just avoiding fructose, therefore a broader approach to IBS management may be appropriate - which may include medication, the low FODMAP diet, or other interventions. Discussing with your doctor or dietitian will better help to come up with an individualized plan to help you manage!

    I hope this helps!
