What’s your typical day in the life with IBS?

Here’s my typical day with IBS-M. When I wake up, I drink 16 oz. of water. I don’t really want to, but it helps push down the acid since I have GERD. It also helps with my digestion. I don’t dare eat breakfast until I have arrived at work, and I keep an emergency kit (changes of clothes, wet wipes, adult diaper, disposable bags) both in my vehicle and at work.

Breakfast is a handful of almonds and a piece of fruit if I’m feeling well enough to eat. I sip chamomile tea all morning and water all afternoon and evening. I will eat lunch on days that I am not having diarrhea. I try to eat enough vegetables to get my fiber, and I like to sprinkle ground flaxseed onto some foods for extra fiber. I used to drink Metamucil 30 minutes before dinner, but now it seems to actually cause my constipation to worsen. Dinner is my big meal of the day because I am near my own bathroom and feel safe to eat. I make sure to not eat to satiety, though, and to finish at least three hours before bedtime, or I will go to sleep fighting nausea.

I go to sleep as early as I’m able because there’s always a possibility that I will awaken in pain and be up for hours making multiple visits to the bathroom.

I been told I have IBS but never had ant tests to prove it.
I got constipated and 5 different Drs ignored me one sent to a psychiatrist.
It turn out I had an impaction and a fissure..
I went to the ER about 21 times each time I only got enemas and sent home .
This went on from August 19 to Sept 28.
Finally my family Dr sent me to a colorectum Dr .I had wait a month to see him.
He did surgery on my fissure and discovered my impact but he added water to it to break and it didn’t break a week later he did a procedure to remove it .
Now it’s been 2 1/2 months I developed gastritis right the procedure first two months were hell.
Horrible pain and nausea throwing up all day .
Two weeks ago my pain is more or less gone , nausea has been gone for 23 days .
My problems now my bowel.movements yesterday I went 6 times today gone only two times worried I. Constipated .
Just took prune juice muxed with apple juice .
Last night. To metamucil with hope of having just one large bowel.movement .
I don’t go out much I spend my days in the bathroom!
Thought the whole ordeal I lost 60 pounds !!

I start my day at 6:30 am with thyroid meds, because I had my thyroid removed after finding suspicious nodules in it (fortunately no cancer). Then I go back to bed because I also have psoriatic arthritis, so I’m exhausted all the time. I get up around 11 and take Welchol to stop the excess bile ( gall bladder removed). I also take hyoscyamine to stop the grinding in my stomach. The 2 fiber pills, Align, and Alosterone, and omeprazole and Otezla. At lunch time I repeat hyoscyamine and Welchol and omeprazole and at bedtime I take hyoscyamine, Alosterone, trintellix, omeprazole, and other antistress meds. I have a limited diet and often take Imodium too. Overall, 15 diffetent prescriptions. Scary. Who knows what these chemicals, that are keeping me alive, will have on my life span. I am scared everyday.

Hi, peg215 – thanks for taking the time to answer this question! I’m so sorry to hear about all of the complexities you face on a daily basis with meds and other health issues. That certainly must be a lot to manage. It makes sense that you’re fearful. This community understands! I wanted to mention that we have a sister site for psoriatic arthritis here: I also wanted to share a couple of links that speak to others’ fears about their psoriatic arthritis and IBS:

I hope this is helpful, peg215. Please come back anytime you need support! – Chris, Team Member

I take an ACACIA fiber powder with banana every AM, again late afternoon or with dinner if there is something to mix it in. I have 1 1/2 cp coffee. I drink water all day, mint tea that I make and try to follow my IBS diet criteria as much as possible. 1/2 hr exercise every other day or more. Relaxation techniques.
